About The Investment Manager

Platinum Investment Management Limited, trading as “Platinum Asset Management”, is an Australian company (ABN 25 063 565 006), regulated by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (Australian Financial Services Licence 221935) (Platinum). It is owned by Platinum Asset Management Limited (ABN 13 050 064 287), a company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (code: PTM).

Founded in 1994 by Kerr Neilson, Andrew Clifford and a few of their former colleagues, Platinum has built a strong long-term track record as an investment manager specialising in international equities. In addition to the sub-funds of Platinum World Portfolios plc, Platinum also manages multiple other public and private mandates that cover a range of different regional (e.g. Europe, Japan and Asia ex Japan) and industry focuses (e.g. Health Care, Technology and Brands). As of 30 June 2015, Platinum has approximately US$20 billion in funds under management.

Platinum has a simple objective – to deliver superior long-term absolute returns to investors. As at 30 June 2015:

  • The flagship Platinum International Fund (FUM: approx. US$8.5 billion) achieved an average compound annual return of 13.4% since its inception on 30 April 1995, more than twice that of the MSCI All Country World Net Index (A$).
  • The Platinum Asia Fund (FUM: approx. US$4.2 billion) achieved an average compound annual return of 17.0% since its inception on 4 March 2003, compared to 11.1% by the MSCI All Country Asia ex Japan Net Index (A$).
  • The Platinum Japan Fund (FUM: approx. US$462 million) achieved an average compound annual return of 15.7% since its inception on 30 June 1998, compared to 2.1% by the MSCI Japan Net Index (A$).

This track record of strong long-term performance was made possible by having a talented and disciplined team of investment specialists who have been applying and refining Platinum's distinctive investment methodology systematically over the past 20 years.

Platinum’s style of investment management is focused on seeking out the neglected and overlooked parts of the market. Its core expertise is in identifying companies that have sound businesses and promising growth prospects but are temporarily out-of-favour with the market.

To identify companies whose businesses and growth prospects are temporarily inappropriately valued by the market, Platinum employs a thematic stock picking approach. Each portfolio is built through a process of individual stock selection (a “bottom-up” approach) rather than from any pre-determined asset allocation by macro-economic modelling (the so-called “top–down” model) or by reference to any index weightings (the so-called “benchmarking” model).

Platinum applies both qualitative and quantitative analyses when selecting stock. Considerations in connection with each company typically include, but are not limited to:

  • whether the company’s business is competitive and sustainable;
  • the quality of the company’s management;
  • the company’s ownership structure;
  • whether the company is financially sound;
  • the company’s price to earnings ratio, price to book ratio, and free cash flow; and
  • whether the company is likely to generate free cash flow that will grow.

Such analyses are underpinned by observations and studies of broader socio-political and macroeconomic themes and trends.
